1. For each situation described in parts a-c, identify or briefly describe i) the observational unit, ij the sample, ij the population, and iv) each variable and its type (categorical nominal, categorical ordinal, numerical discrete, or numerical continuous). Below is an example: Researchers recruited 60 American cigarette smokers aged 18-34 who desired to quit smoking. Half of the participants were randomly selected to receive the drug bupropion cigarettes smoked during the following three months was recorded for each subject. and half received a placebo. The number of i) the observational unit is each person/smoker li) the sample is the 60 cigarette smokers who participated in the study il) the population is all American cigarette smokers aged 18-34 who desire to quit smoking iv) One variable is the treatment (bupropion on variable is number of cigarettes smoked during the following three months, which is numerical discrete. a) The following information was collected at 15 different New Jersey blueberry farms: acreage (km2), number of blueberry varieties grown, annual yield (kg), and the farm owners assessment of how likely the farm is to turn a profit in the following year (on a scale ranging from very likely to very unlikely)

Answer #1

Here the observational unit = each blueberry farm

Sample = 15 blueberry farms from new jersey

Population is all blueberry farms in new jersey

On variable is here acreage that is area of land is numerical continuous variable

Second is number of blueberry varieties grown which is numerical discrete variable

Third is yield which is also numerical continuous variable

Last one that owner's assessment on scale ranging from very likely to unlikely is categorical ordinal since order is important here

Harriet And Smoking Cessation This chapter’s case study demonstrates the usefulness of the Ecological Model and its interaction with individual-focused interventions, and it also draws together information from other models discussed in the chapter. The case study is presented in segments of a life course as well as an episodic perspective of factors involved in the case. It provides a perspective of the social changes that allow individual behavior changes to succeed, while also examining some of the processes involved...
