Oil and water do not mix due to their incompatible molecular interactions. Imagine a U-shaped tube with a constant cross-sectional area of 1 cm2 that holds enough water (1000 kg/m3) that the level on each side is in the straight part of the tube (figure left). Now 11.4 mL of oil (700 kg/m3) is added and reaches equilibrium as shown. How high did the water level rise in cm?

Answer #1

sk

Pressure at A, PA= Patm + Pwg(2h)

Pressure at B, PB = Patm + pog(hol)

Pressure at point A=Pressure at point B

Patm +2Pwgh = Patm + pog(hot)

Pohoi h = 2pw

Given that, pe = 1000 kg/m3, p. = 700 kg/m3

Area of tubeA= 1 cm?, Volume of oil is V = 11.4mL = 11.4 cm3

V = Ahoi hoi =

h = Pohoil 2pw POV 700 * 11.4 2PA 2 * 1000 * 1 = 3.99 cm 4 cm

Water level rises by h = 3.99 cm 4 cm

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
