key messages

Food and nutrition play an important in promotion of health and chronic disease prevention. Every 5 years, HHS (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) and USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) publish the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the Nation’s go-to source for nutrition advice. The latest edition is the eighth edition of the Dietary Guidelines. It reflects the current body of nutrition science, helps health professionals and policymakers guide Americans to make healthy food and beverage choices, and serves as the science-based foundation for vital nutrition policies and programs across the United States. In short, the 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines outlines how people can improve their overall eating patterns — the complete combination of foods and drinks in their diet.

The guidelines

  1. folllow a healthy eatinfg pattern across the lifespan that accounts for all food and beverages within an appropriate calorie level to acheive and maintain a helathy body weight, support nutrient adequacy and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
  2. focus on variety, nutrient density, and amount. to meet nutrient needs within calorie limits, choose a variety of nutrient-dense foods across and within all food groups in recommended amounts.

· A variety of vegetables from all of the subgroups—dark green, red and orange, legumes (beans and peas), starchy, and other

· Fruits- whole fruits

· Grains, at least half of which are whole grains

· Fat-free or low-fat dairy, including milk, yogurt, cheese, and/or fortified soy beverages

· A variety of protein foods, including seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, legumes (beans and peas), and nuts, seeds, and soy products

3. Limit calories from added sugars and saturated fats and reduce sodium intake. Consume an eating pattern low in added sugars, saturated fats (( less than 10 percent of calories per day from added sugars and saturated fats ), and sodium(less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day of sodium). Cut back on foods and beverages higher in these components to amounts that fit within healthy eating patterns.

4. Shift to healthier food and beverage choices. If alcohol is consumed, it should be consumed in moderation, up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men—and only by adults of legal drinking age Choose nutrient-dense foods and beverages across and within all food groups in place of less healthy choices. Consider cultural and personal preferences to make these shifts easier to accomplish and maintain.

5. Support healthy eating patterns for all. Everyone has a role in helping to create and support healthy eating patterns in multiple settings nationwide, from home to school to work to communities.

In short, five overarching guidelines in this eighth edition:

  1. Follow a healthy eating pattern across the lifespan. Eating patterns are the combination of foods and drinks that a person eats over time.
  2. Focus on variety, nutrient-dense foods, and amount.
  3. Limit calories from added sugars and saturated fats, and reduce sodium intake.
  4. Shift to healthier food and beverage choices.
  5. Support healthy eating patterns for all.

The Dietary Guidelines For Americans, eighth edition (2015-2020) was published in December 2015

Focused age group

The primary audiences for the dietary guidelines are policymakers, as well as nutrition and health professionals, not the general public. It translates science into succinct, considered as a critical tool for professionals to help Americans make healthy choices in their daily lives to prevent chronic disease and enjoy a healthy diet. It is not indented to treat diseases. Regardless of an individual’s current health status, almost all people in the United States could benefit from shifting choices to better support healthy eating patterns. It serves as the evidence-based foundation for nutrition education materials that are developed by the Federal Government for the public. Thus, the Dietary Guidelines may be used or adapted by medical and nutrition professionals to encourage healthy eating patterns to patients.

The guidelines also focus on physical activity. Americans of all ages—children, adolescents, adults, and older adults—should meet the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans to help promote health and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Americans should aim to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. The relationship between diet and physical activity contributes to calorie balance and managing body weight.

It is clearly understood that the guidelines are developed for all age groups and everyone regardless of their present health condition.
