The New Deal was a sweeping program of the U.S. federal government's public works projects, federal regulations, and financial system changes to help the country thrive and rebound from the 1930's Great Depression. The New Deal programs created jobs and provided financial support to the unemployed, the young, and the elderly, as well as adding safeguards and constraints to the banking industry and monetary system.
FDR founded the Civilian Conservation Corps to combat unemployment in 1933. This work relief plan had the desired effect, creating jobs during the Great Depression for many thousands of Americans. The CCC was responsible for building several programs for public works and building structures and trails in national parks that are still in use today.
Originally established in 1933 was the Civil Works Administration to create jobs for the unemployed. Focusing on high-paid jobs in the construction sector resulted in much greater federal government spending than originally expected. The CWA ended largely due to resistance to its expense in 1934.
The Federal Housing Administration is a government agency set up in 1934 by FDR to tackle the Great Depression housing crisis. Combined with the banking crisis, a large number of unemployed workers resulted in a situation where banks remembered loans and people lost their homes. The FHA has been designed to regulate mortgages and housing conditions; it still plays an important role in American housing financing today.
The U.S. has declared certain New Deal laws unconstitutional. Supreme Court on the grounds that neither the Constitution's trade nor taxation clauses gave authority to the federal government to regulate commerce or implement social and economic reform. Roosevelt, confident that all the measures are legal, proposed a reorganization of the court early in 1937. In the Fair Deal of President Harry S. Truman (1945–53), Roosevelt's domestic policies were generally implemented, and both major U.S. parties came to recognize most of the New Deal changes as a permanent part of national life.
