Answer: The functional patterns help a nurse to understand the current and past state of health for a patient as the functional assessment mainly focused on the patterns that human has. It means that the health perception, lifestyle, physical activities performance, sleeping schedule, nutrition intake etc. These things reveals about the patient adoption and functional patterns. This can be utilized by the nurse to provide teaching, incorporating methods of my health promotion as well as reducing the risk of further disease. It helps nurse to provide teaching care plans.

For example, a patient is suffering from cardiovascular disease, hence it is important to know the functional patterns such as what the patient eats, rest and his physical activities. Suppose patient likes to eat fast foods, alcohol consumption etc. Then the nurse can provide education to avoid the intake of fast food and oily food. Increase consumption of healthy green vegetables are good for health.
