Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine disorder in which the body is unable to produce or absorb inslulin, there are mainly two types of diabetes mellitus, type 1 which is known as insluin - dependent diabetes mellitus and type 2 which is a non - insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

RISK FACTORS :

  • Family history.
  • Lifestyle.
  • Race.
  • Age.

QUICK FACT :

Diabetes mellitus is not caused by eating sugar.

SYMPTOMS :

  • Polydipsia.
  • Polyuria.
  • Polyphagia.
  • Delayed wound healing.
  • Increased perspiration.
  • Weakness.

TREATMENTS :

Treatments involve oral hypoglycemic agents such as metformin, glimepeide etc.

However if the blood sugar level is not controlled patient can be put on insulin such human actrapid, lantus, apidra etc. Each insulin is classified according to short - acting, long-acting, intermediate acting and long acting.

PREVENTION :

  • Maintaining proper diet with less carbohydrates and fats.
  • Exercising daily.
  • Following up with the blood sugar levels.
