Martha Rogers believed that nursing is a separate and essential discipline and a unique field of study. She worked hard to establish nursing in higher education. Degree nursing education program provides more choice for
students when they come into nursing profession..In 1970 and early
1980 there is no much development with associate degree nursing
education program among registered nursing population..Due to
nursing shortage new development in nursing profession with
associated degree to improve nurses knowledge and skills, they have
started government aided programs for minorities, and low income
nurses to continue their education..That time adequate nurses in
hospital with advanced knowledge and skills met the hospital and
patient requirement..Nationwide there are 800 associate degree
nursing program were developed..Associated degree program
representatives focused on nursing future..They developed
collaboration efforts among the nursing organization to promote
retention efforts and recruitment..
Dr. Martha Rogers is a nursing educator, professor, and the head of
the division of nursing at new york university in 1954..She
provided theorietical foundation for their profession..Rogers
stated nursing was a learned profession , but there was not an
adequate focus nursing knowledge..she changed the curriculum and
she introduced the first book 'Educational revolution in nursing'
in 1961..she had more influence on nursing as director in one of
the largest nursing education program in the country..Freeman '
Provocative" book changed the thought what nursing education is and
it should be..They differentiate the nursing as a 'vocational',
Technical or associate degree nursing education' from '
professional' or university-based education..They made difference
in faculty preparation, teaching approach and objective..
She realized that university-based education needed for
professional nursing education..she clearly stated that 'the term,
professional nurse must be referred for those who posses a broad
foundation of liberal arts(biological, physical ans social science,
nursing theory provided and controlled by a college of
university..she realized that field practice is not enough for
their learning skills..graduate education will improve in clinical
specialization, knowledge and responsible leadership..doctoral
level the nurse should do nursing research..Rogers strongly
believed that colleges and universities providing for nurses
theoritical knowledge and basic principles needed for their
professional practice..
She felt that nursing education should prepare the nurses for the
future,old method of teaching will never useful for their tomorrow
needs..Theories helpful for them to improve to improve their
decipline , nursing is a professional education they need
intellectual training, a body of abstract priniciples , logical
