Introduction :

Vaccination contributes to significant reductions in communicable disease . However, declining vaccination rates may be due to parental concerns resulting in increases in preventable disease . Vaccination decision making is not simply a matter of two opposing viewpoints, but includes a spectrum from complete refusal to confident acceptance .

Reasons for opposing childhood vaccination :

Parental vaccination decision making involves

  • Cognitive,
  • Psychosocial,
  • Political factors influenced by current scientific, cultural, and media environments

There continues to be a knowledge gap in how to best increase vaccination rates.

Parental refusal of vaccines is a growing a concern for the increased occurrence of vaccine preventable diseases in children. A number of studies have looked into the reasons that parents refuse, delay, or are hesitant to vaccinate their child(ren).

These reasons vary widely between parents, but they can be encompassed in 4 overarching categories.

The 4 categories are

  • religious reasons,
  • personal beliefs or philosophical reasons,
  • safety concerns,
  • desire for more information from healthcare providers.
