3. Your local community is looking to increase the mental health services available to citizens. A community support system is being developed and will be run by the health department. List and explain the three tenets of community support systems. List one of the principles that are basic to psychiatric rehabilitation. Explain how an institution could strive to achieve this principle. |
1) Giving home care to the patient is more comfortable for the patient as he/ she do not have to live away from the family, home is the most comfortable place to relax rather than a hospital setting, on the other hand patient in home seeting wont be able to see other patients with the same illness recovering to feel better, also interventions like group therapy are not possible in home setting
I would prefer family member for home care because of following reasons
- To avoid frequent crises.
- To make patient comfortable and avoid stress of sepration from family members.
- To manage patients self care task with ease.
Challenges for nurse while working in home care setting
- As nurses are taught to work in team while lifting, home health nurse has to lift incapacitated patient by themself without adequate equipment during bathing, sheet changing, getting patient out of bed etc.
- Difficulty with the unfamiliar techniques and eqipments present at home.
- Confused and angry patient can become combative due to presence of someone in their home.
2) Primary prevention aims to prevent disease or injury before it even occurs. this is done by prevening exposure to hazards
eg immunization against infectious diseases, education about health and safety habits
Secondary prevention aims to reduce the impact of the disease or injury that has already occured.
eg regular exams and screening tests, diet and exercise programs.
Tertiary prevention- Aims to soften the impact of an ongoing illness or injury that has lastinf effects. this is done by helping people manage long term problems.
eg cardiac or stroke rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation programs
3) community support system was developed to identify essential elemets needed for a person with a mental illness to be able to move towrds recovery
1) center circle- it potrays recovery as a multidimentional concept. hope is the anchor point upon which recovery is based.
2) middle circle- they provide bedrock for the way service system components are designed, implemented and delivered.
3) outer circle- it portrays the fudamental component of a community support system.
Principle of psychiatric rehabilitation
They convey hope and respect and believe that all individuals have capacity for growth and learning
This principle can be achieved by considering that every patient has chance of improvement, all are considered equal and the chances of returning back is the same for all.
