There are many reasons that allow tourism to be one of the most valuable aspects of Europe. Barcelona is a city that does not stay behind. The capital of Catalunya receives thousands of visitors yearly, and it is considered among the cities that are most travel-friendly and common to visit in Europe. For more than two decades it has been considered, and is still now, part of Spain. But the majority of Catalans have been against it and raised their voice, loudly. Since 2010, the lands of Catalunya, especially Barcelona, have witnessed massive manifestations and violent activities related to this issue. As a consequence of independence referendum, pro-independence and pro-unity groups have taken to the streets to protest. This negative political scenario in Barcelona is likely to drag down the business confidence, tourism and impact the GDP of the nation. Given the revolutionary context in Barcelona, tourism, a fundamental activity for the cosmopolitan city, has been affected negatively.

To investigate, information can be gathered from airlines operating in Barcelona which can give an apt quantitative figure about the number of tourists visiting from different parts of the world. This data can be gathered month-wise to know the seasonality of tourism and how it has changed over the years and in relation to the revolutions. Tourism indicators are the base for the research methodology, these are the occupancy rate in hotels. The higher the occupancy rates in hotels, the more the industry is evolving and is active, which means it contributes to the economy of Barcelona. If occupancy rates result to be lower than anticipated, it will affect negatively the business and therefore what it involves. However the research is not fullproof as hotels may be occupied by domestic visitors. Secondly unemployment rate is not good indicator because it can also suggest the economic conditions

The research should incorporate paramters like total flight occupancy rates inwards, total visitor traffic on airports, total restaurant visitors which accurately predict fair range of visitors that could have visited.

A great digital marketing campaign and sponsorship on various sports and recreational events can give good coverage about top destinations in Spain.
