The ical tot and The Case of Kody Kody was expelled from high school for getting explosively angry at a teacher who, accordin to Kody, had humiliated him in front of his class. Kody was told that he would not be readmin ted to school unless he sought professional help. His mother called a therapist and explained the situation to her, and the therapist agreed to see him. Although Kody was uncomfortable and embarrassed over having to see a therapist, he was nevertheless willing to talk. He to the therapist that he knew he had done wrona by lashing out angrily at the teacher but the the teacher had provoked him. He said that although he was usually good about keeping hi feelings inside, this time he had "just lost it." After a few sessions, the therapist determined that there were many problems in Kody family. He lived with an extreme amount of stress, and to work effectively with Kody it would be essential to see the entire family. Indeed, he did have a problem, but he was not the prob lem. He was covering up many family secrets, including a verbally abusive stepfather and an alcoholic mother. Hesitantly, he agreed that it would be a good idea to have the entire family come in for therapy. When the therapist contacted the parents, they totally rejected the idea of family therapy. The mother asserted that the problem was with Kody and that the therapist should concentrate her efforts on him. A few days before his next scheduled appointment his mother called to cancel, saying that they had placed Kody in homebound study and that he therefore no longer required counseling. • What are the ethical responsibilities of the therapist in this situation? • Should Kody be seen as a condition of returning to school? Answer) 1) Ethical responsibilities of the therapist in this case is to advocate the case of Kody because he could not protect himself from these situations and his parents were not supportive. This is the case of child abuse and he should contact child protective services because he is legally bound to report the abuse. To protect the client inspite of the social barriers is within the rights of the therapist.

2) Yes, Kody can be seen in the condition of returning to school because his anger is not toward the school authorities or the fellow classmates, nor he intended to hurt them.

3) Therapist must have used encouragement strategies with Kody to boost his confidence in himself and that he could control his feelings better.

4) Therapist should have waited few more sessions before contacting the family in this case because he could have then known better that Kody’s family will not send him to therapy anymore. He would have time to encourage Kody to seek help for himself if he felt unsafe in his house.
