Suppose you have been hired to manage human resources for a small company that offers business services including customer service calls and business report preparation. The 20 person company has been preparing to expand from serving a few local clients that are well known to the company's owners. The owners believe that their experience and reputation for quality will help them expand to serve more and larger clients. What challenges will you need to prepare the company to meet? How will you begin?

As the company is expanding it will face its own set of human resource related challenges and other challenges as well. First of all there will be increased level of administrative burdens on all departments within the company. Secondly and more importantly as the company grows from servicing few local clients to servicing larger clients it will be necessary to maintain the level of employee engagement. This is because the enthusiasm and passion that employees have in a small business set up will be hard to maintain and replicate as the business grows in size. As a HR manager it will be my responsibility to ensure that employees feel connected even as the organization is growing. This can be done by ensuring close collaboration with management. Also flexibility should not come at a cost of structure and hierarchy. We know that for a growing organization structure and hierarchy becomes important. As a HR manager it will be my duty and responsibility to ensure that employees are managed in a way and that structures are built in a way that ensures that flexibility of employees and the organization is retained. Another thing that I will have to do is to look out for potential leaders. Form the current pack of employees I will have to identify top achievers and those who have the potential to lead and manage in future. As the company is growing it will need new leaders in new positions and hence this task of mine will ensure smooth progression. I will also have to establish a mentoring program to develop and nurture talent in a systematic manner. The identified talent will be mentored, trained and guided by the top management of the company. This will help in building a pipeline of talented pool and the company will need them while they are expanding and growing. Lastly as a HR manager I will provide tools to all the employees so that they will be able to support growth. A system for measuring the performance of the employees will have to be put in place and optimal performance of each employee will enable the company to achieve its goals.
