different drug categories are -

  • alcohol - it is a beverage that causes intoxication. most people are addicted to it and its addiction causes severe problems like liver and kidney damage.
  • opioids - these are derived from the opium and interacts mainly with neurotransmitters and causes a feeling of pleasure and pain-killers. for example - heroin.
  • Benzodiazepines - these interacts with the neurotransmitter GABA and are found in sleeping medicines. example is valium.
  • cannabinoids - its active agent is marijuana and it creates a feeling of elation. they can affect both the physical and mental health of a person.
  • barbiturates - these are the derivatives of barbituric acid and it slows down the brain functioning. they are highly addictive. for example - amytal.
  • depressants - these drugs cause a feeling of relaxation and creates feeling of euphoria.
  • stimulants -they increase focus, energy, and wakefulness of a person. but is very addictive. for example - cocaine.
  • hallucinogens - these drugs alter the person's perception of reality. for example - LSD.
  • inhalants - these drugs are snored or taken by breathing.
