Lead poisoning

Children may ingest lead from licking lead paints particularly from old furniture, window sills, toys and glazed pottery. It may be acute and chronic. Acute due to accidental intake and chronic may be due ti insidious and depends upon the rate and degree of absorption.

Complications are the following :

  • Severe neurological damage ie, lead encephalopathy (headache, vomiting, convulsions and papilledema)
  • Cranial nerve palsies
  • Peripheral neuropathy(wrist and foot drop)
  • Muscular weakness
  • Hypertension
  • Retarded development
  • Severe anemia
