The nurse is caring for a child diagnosed with celiac disease. This child has a history of pica. What should the nurse consider while planning the child’s care?

Celiac Disease-A disease in which the small intestine is hypersensitive to gluten,leading to difficulty in digesting food.

Symptoms of celiac disease ;Some common symptoms of celiac disease are diarrhea,decreased appetite,abdominal pain and bloating,poor growth and weight loss.

Nursing care for celiac disease child;

1.Asses the mouth and skin

Oral ulcaration and sore may be present.teeth may have areas of discolouration because of nutrional deficiencies and vomiting.Itchy blistery rash may occur in elbows kness and buttocks i severe case called dermatitis herpatiformis.

2.Assess Abdomen

  • Look for bloating
  • Listen for bowel sounds
  • Feel for fluid ,fukkness or pain note if constipation is present

3.Obtain history from parents

  • Symptoms
  • Frequency
  • Known triggers
  • family history

4.Monitor labs and diagnostic tests

5.Adress vomiting and diarrhea as approproate

Excessive vomiting and diarrhea cause severe electrolyte and fluid imbalance and should be addressed as appropriate to prevent long term complication or circulatory collapse.

Have to provide vitamin A D E K rich diet with folic acid and iron suppliments for the kid. When child have celiac disease, vitamin are not absorbed in to the body and end up kin to rectum instead along with undigested matter.this leads Vitamin deficiencies. so to prevent electrolyte imbalance and vitamin deficiencies suppliments has to be give.

6.Assess for growth and developmental milestone

Children with celiac often have delays in meeting in developmental mile stones.children may have slow growth due to malabsorption issues.

7.Provide nutritional education for patient and parent

Have to provide gluten free diat.eg-rice ,avocados ,bananas,kiwi , scrambled eggs etc. providing education regarding possible trigger foods.Recommend keeping a diet long to help determine trigger to avoid.Gluten may also be found in hygiene products and children's modeling clay
