Answer #1

XYZ3 : Water -insoluble ionic compound ; X -metal ; Y,Z - Non-metal

(a) X -tansition metal of 4th period

3 elements of Highest electronegativity : Co , Ni, Cu

It does not react with acids. : metal activity series Cu is least reactive.

It is Cu.

(b) Charge on X (Cu) = +2

(c) Polyatomic anions (YZ3) : CO32- ; NO3-

(d) Non metal Z = O (same in both anions )

(e) Charge of Polyatomic anions (YZ3) : CO32- matches with metal ion charge . :CO32-

(f) from Polyatomic anions (YZ3) : CO32- : Y = C

(g) XYZ3 : CuCO3 ( Water -insoluble ionic compound)

Copper carbonate.

(h) Percent composition by mass :XYZ3 : CuCO3

Total mass = 63.5 g/mol (Cu) + 12g/mol (C) + 3*16 g/mol (O) = 123.5 g/mol

Cu % by mass = (63.5/123.5 )*100 = 51.42 %

C % by mass = (12/123.5 )*100 = 9.72 %

O % by mass = (48/123.5 )*100 = 38.86 %

In many chemical reactions of two or more compounds, ions are present in the solution that do not participate in the reaction. These ions, known as spectator ions, can be removed from the chemical equation describing the reaction. A chemical equation that has the spectator ions removed is known as a net ionic equation. Reactions between ionic compounds often result in the precipitation of an insoluble compound. Spectator ions and precipitation products of a chemical reaction can be predicted by...

Experiment 8 Double Replacement Reactions Background: Some reactions have the net effect of causing the cation of each reactant to trade places, forming a compound with the other anion. These reactions are known as double replacement reactions. In the example below (unbalanced equation), the barium and sodium cations switch places so that barium forms a product with sulfate while sodium forms a product with chloride. Note that the formula of each product is determined by the charges of the ions,...
