Go back to the previous assignment (Assignment 11.1: Mental Disorders) and choose a mental disorder or problem you want to study further. Perhaps you are interested in the problem of depression, anxiety (such as test anxiety or social anxiety), substance abuse, or another issue. Step 2 Explore the treatment options for the disorder you have chosen. You might find information you can use by using your favorite Internet search engine to find the following: Types of Psychological Treatment What Is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy? National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) Step 3 Report about treatment methods. Write a one-page paper to address the following points: Describe the treatment used and what occurs during treatment. Are there other treatment approaches that might also work? What are they? Is the treatment approach supported by research? Describe, if you can, the results of the research done on this treatment approach. Compare and contrast this therapy approach with at least one other therapy approach for this problem.

DEPRESSION

It is mental disorder characterised by lack of energy,depressed mood,loss of interest, low self esteem, lack of concentration.

TREATMENT

*Anti depressants

Anti depressants are the drug of choice to treat depression symptoms. It is mainly used in moderate to severe depression.

* Combination therapy

Doctors are combine anti depressants with CBT in severe depression to get better results.

*Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

It is a treatment modality for depression to understand the thoughts and behaviour of the patient and how it affects them. It helps to overcome the negative thoughts of the patient eg: low self esteem, hopelessness. CBT is carried out by trained counsellor with 6-8 session over 10-12 weeks. Group CBT is also available.

*INTERPERSONAL THERAPY (IPT)

Interpersonal therapy mainly focused on the relationship of the patient with others and problems related to it. Communication and coping difficulties are treated. There are research evidence that IPT it effective as CBT and anti depressants.

*PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY

In this therapy, psychoanalytic therapists helps to bring out the thoughts in the patient's mind. It helps to become aware of hidden problems of the patient.

*COUNCELLING

Councelling is form of therapy which helps to think about the problems and counsellor helps to find the solution for the problems. It consists of 6-12 session last for an hour. Counsellor helps to support the patient and provide practical advice. It helps the patient to cope up current crisis, anger,relationship problems.

#OTHER TREATMENTS

*MINDFULNESS

It is a treatment modality for depressive patient which involves close attention to feeling and thoughts of the patient and helps to improve mental wellbeing. The aim is to understand the mind and body and to reduce anxiety.

*BRAIN STIMULATION

It used in severe depression patient who hasn't responds to other treatments. Electromagnetic currents are used to stimulate the brain to improve the symptoms of depression using transcranial direct current stimulation,ECT,repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.

*ECT(ElectroConvulsive Therapy)

It is more intense type of brain stimulation for severe depression patient in which electric current are passed to the brain using electrodes. It produces seizures and reduce depression symptoms. It is usually given twice a week for 3 to 6 weeks. Consent is required for the procedure.

*LITHIUM

It is another drug of choice for depression. Two types of drugs are available lithium carbonate and lithium citrate.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST WITH CBT AND PCA (person centred approach)

* It deals with conscious mind

* Focus on current issues and problems

* Both are facilitate healthy coping mechanism

*Improve the wellbeing by collaborates therapeutic relationship
