Part-5:

A box plot (also known as a box and whisker plot) is especially useful for indicating whether a distribution is skewed and whether there are potential unusual observations (outliers) in the data set. They are also very useful when large numbers of observations are involved and when two or more data sets are being compared.

Box plots are most often used for Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA). EDA is the first step in the data analysis process that is used to understand and summarize the contents of a data set.

A few examples where Box plots can be very useful are:

  1. When you have multiple data sets from independent sources and you want to compare the mean/median/mode for them:
    • Data from before and after a process change
    • Test score comparison between different schools/colleges
    • Amount of time spent per day on social networking by girls and boys
  2. When you want to check for outliers in a data set

Let's take the example of Time spent on social media by girls and boys. Suppose we carry out a survey among boys and girls of various age categories and ask them about the time they spend on social media every day.

Using this survey data, we can plot two different box plots, one each for girls and boys. By using these box plots, we can then answer a few questions like:

  • Average time spent by boys and girls on social media per day and how do these values compare against each other.
  • The inter-quartile range for boys and girls

Part-6:

A bar chart or bar graph is a chart or graph that presents categorical data with rectangular bars with heights or lengths proportional to the values that they represent. The bars can be plotted vertically or horizontally. They allow us to see and compare groups or categories based on the scores (often means) of another (often continuous) variable. Bar graphs are good for plotting data that spans a length of time (for example, for comparing productivity between the start and the end of the day) or they can be used for comparing different items in a related category (for example, test results for different sections of a class).

Selecting a random sample is an example of a statistical experiment, and the sample statistic p is a numerical description of the result of the experiment. Therefore, p is a random variable. The probability distribution of p is called the sampling distribution of p In practice, you select one random sample and use the information from that sample to estimate the population parameter of interest. However statisticians sometimes perform a procedure called repeated sampling, in which the experiment is run...

Q2. The underlying principle of all statistical inference is one that uses sample statistics to learn something (that is to infer) about population parameter. Convince me that you understand this statement by writing a short paragraph describing an example in which you might use a sample estimate to infer about a population parameter. Clearly identify and define the terms: population, parameter, sample, sample-estimate and sample error in your example. Be as specific as possible. You may make up numbers. [8...
