The glucose test is the most frequently performed test to detect diabetes mellitus. Chemstrips and the Multistix brand are used to test the glucose in urine.

The glucose that is present in the urine can be detected by the glucose oxidase method of reagent strip testing.based on a double sequential enzyme reaction:
step 1 - glucose oxidase in the strip catalyzes a reaction between glucose and air to produce gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide.
step 2 - peroxidase in the strip catalyzes the reaction between hydrogen peroxide and a coloured chromogen to form an oxidized coloured compound,
Specific for glucose = 100 mg/dL
Doesn't react with other sugars

False Positive = contamination with peroxide or strong oxidizing substances
False Negative = reducing substance (ascorbic acid), high specific gravity, low temperature, bacteria (2hr rule)
