In planning the project, consider the clients educational needs in promoting health and providing self-care. Select a health promotion model to use as a framework for the educational plan. Identify health goals and develop behavioral outcomes that will indicate the plan has been successful. When designing the teaching plan and developing the content outline, students will select two research articles and discuss how findings can be applied to the plan. Students will discuss the educational methods and tools they will use to educate the client. Finally, students will design an evaluation plan to measure the success of their health promotion and patient education project for the client. The purpose of this activity is to provide the student the opportunity to use a health promotion model to guide development of a teaching plan for self-care (weave in the supportive-educative concepts of Orem’s theory), use research literature in planning a health promotion and patient education project, and stimulate critical thinking about the health promotion and patient education needs of clients with chronic illnesses. Select one of the cases below and identify the learning needs for Self-Care. In planning a health promotion and health education plan for this case, students will select two research articles from the literature and discuss how findings can be applied to the plan. Case Study # 1 Anne (25 years old) was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder six months ago. She is taking Lithium and has been adherent to her medication regimen. She lives alone in an apartment and works for her father who has a Mortuary business. Work has been busy recently and she has felt “stressed out”. Two weeks ago Anne’s health deteriorated and she was hospitalized with a severe depression with psychosis. She is feeling much better and soon will be discharged. She wants to continue to live independently but her family is skeptical about her ability for self-care. Anne stated that she did well for a couple months and thinks she can do well again. She asks for your help in teaching her how to better take care of herself to avoid future readmissions.

Bipolar disorder is a disorder of mood consisting of episodes of depression and mania (or hypomania). Bipolar disorder is also known as Manic depressive disorder.

It is a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated energy levels, cognition, and mood with or without one or more depressive episodes.

Bipolar disorder is a leading cause of disability worldwide, and the lifetime prevalence of this condition is about 1% in community populations.

Application of Orem's Theory of Self Care

Orem’s Theory, indicating that self-care is an individual’s activity apprehended by her/himself and directed towards a goal. It’s an action performed in real life situations which the individual aims at her/himself or uses to regulate the factors affecting her/his own development, activities for the benefit of life, health, and well-being.

The therapeutic requirement of self-care comprises all actions inherent to caring for oneself to be performed for some time, in order to meet the self-care needs using valid methods and related sets of actions and operations.

it's understood that losses in the inference of mental states presented by bipolar patients seen to compromise their abilities to relate in a healthy way with relatives, employers, and other people who coexist with them, creating tension and worsening of their condition’s morbidity by increasing the risk of relapses and recurrences of mood-related episodes.

The patient has the self-care of accepting treatment, knowing about the medicines she should take daily and with no refusals. This way, the needed intervention is systematizing medicines so that there’re no changes in dosages and schedules,

thus allowing her some independence and responsibility upon herself. Besides, the importance of this intervention is due to reactions to medicines; lithium carbonate, a mood stabilizer commonly used for controlling BAD,
