Schon defined reflection -on-action as reflecting on how practice can be developed, changed or improvement after the event has occurred.

  • Reflective practice is a key skill for nurses.
  • it enable nurses to manage the impact of caring for other people on a daily is basis.
  • it is process of making sense of events, situations and action in workplace.

GIBBS MODEL FOR REFLECTION

This involves the use of several steps in order to achieve successful reflection in practice.

  1. event description the nurse at this stage has to describe in detail the event on which he or she is reflecting. the description seeks to answer questions such as were the nurse was, who else present at the event ,why the nurse was doing at the event, what the practitioner was doing ,what the other people were doing at the event, what the context of the event was, what then happened ;the part played by the practitioner ;the part played by other people and what the final result was.
  2. feelings and thoughts its a self awareness as he or she expected to recall and explore the things that were going on inside his or her head. it includes answering questions such as how the nurse as feeling at the start of the event ,nurse was thinking about the time of the event, feel of nurse about out come, what nurse thinks of the event.
  3. evaluation: nurse at this stage should try to make or evaluate a judgement about what has happened. she is also expected to consider and distinguish between that which did well and that which did not.
  4. analysis the nurse may need to answer the question whose answer explain what happened in a manner that had been expected.
  5. conclusion it a synthesis stage and is characterized by the insight development in as far as the behavoiur of the practitioner contributed to out come of events
  6. action plan nurse would    have done differently if the event was encountered again

REFLECTION ON ACTION

It refers to the retrospective contemplation of practice situations, by analyzing and interpreting the information recalled

therefore it involve looking back after the event has occurred. its turning of information into knowledge by use of a post mortem done cognitively .

it is believed that this kind of reflection does not only increases ones knowledge but also challenges the theories and concepts held by a person.
