It is suggested to add HCl in excess so that NaHCO3 is the limiting reagent and all of it reacts leading to correct determination of its mass%.

If greater amount of HCl taken but noted as lesser amount for calculation the mass% of NaHCO3 calculated will be lower than the actual due to the excess HCl.
