Enzymes – Enzymes are catalysts found in living organisms and they speeds up the biochemical reactions occurring in the body of living organisms.

They work by lowering the activation energy of the reaction. They react with the substrate to form a transition state that needs less energy to complete the reaction.

Enzymes work without -

  • Altering the equilibrium of the reaction.
  • Altering the standard free energy of the reaction.

Also enzymes can catalyze the reaction in both the direction since they also reduce the energy barrier but do not affect the equilibrium position.

Hence, they also affect the speed of the reaction
