A system has 5 components, two of which are known to have a special marking stamped on the side. (The other 3 components are known not to have the marking). Components are checked one at a time until two of the unmarked components have been found.

a) draw a tree diagram for this experiment

b) what is the probability that both of the marked components are checked?

c) what is the probability that exactly one of the marked components is checked?

d) what is the probability that at least one marked component is checked?

Answer #1

a) Tree diagram is given below

PROBABILITY TREE 2/5 3/5 marked unmarked 1/4 3/4 2/4 2/4 marked unmarked unmarked marked 1/3 2/3 unmarked marked unmarked marked unmarked 1 unmarked unmarked

b) P(both marked components are checked) = (2/5 x 1/4 x 1) + (2/5 x 3/4 x 1/3 x 1) + (3/5 x 2/4 x 1/3 x 1)

= 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1

= 0.3

c) P(exactly one of the marked components is checked) = (2/5 x 3/4 x 2/3) + (3/5 x 2/4 x 2/3)

= 0.2 + 0.2

= 0.4

d) P(at least one marked component is checked) = 1 - P(both are unmarked components)

= 1 - (3/5 x 2/4)

= 1 - 0.3

= 0.7

    3. Three components are connected to form a system as shown in the accompanying diagram. Because the compo- nents in the 2–3 subsystem are connected in parallel, that subsystem will function if at least one of the two individual components functions. For the entire system to function, component 1 must function and so must the 2–3 subsystem. 214 The experiment consists of determining the condition of each component [S (success) for a functioning compo- nent and F (failure) for a...

    4. Reliability of Systems - Take n components to have failure times Ti, T2, ..., Tn If we construct a complex system out of these distribution of the failure time T of the entire svstem in terms of the distributions of Ti, T2, ..., Tn. There are two basic networks. In a series hookup, the system fails as soon as any one of the components fails. Hence T - min(T1, T2, ...,Tn). In a parallel hookup the system is operational...

    4. A parallel system functions whenever at least one of its components works. Suppose you have two separate parallel systems, A and B, each consisting of n identical components that work independently with probability p. a) Consider parallel system A. Given that the system is functioning, what is conditional probability that component 1 works? (This has nothing to do with B yet.) Suppose system B breaks down (all n of its components fail), but system A remains functional. To get...
