Answer #1

Ans) Genetic testing is a type of medical test that identifies changes in chromosomes, genes, or proteins

Genetic testing has potential benefits whether the results are positive or negative for a gene mutation. Test results can provide a sense of relief from uncertainty and help people make informed decisions about managing their health care. Therefore, genetic testing is mandatory.

- Genetic testing is allowed as long as it is part of a voluntary wellness program and reasonably promotes health or prevents disease. At this time, employers cannot penalize employees who do not provide genetic test results. Existing federal laws also protect genetic privacy and nondiscrimination.

- Benefits of genetic testing:

  • Correlate genes to diseases
  • Allow families to make decisions regarding children and lifestyle
  • May provide reassurance if result is negative

-  Problems with genetic testing:

  • Problem: Twinning is possible until days 14-15
  • Ethical issues associated with gender/"ideal" phenotype/eugenics.
  • False positives / false negatives which may lead to unnecessary stress of the parents
