Question

For all the TPN calculations in this section, use the following concentrations Potassium chloride Sodium chloride Calcium gluconate Magnesium sulfate 2 mEq/mL 14.6% 10% 50% 2 mEq/ml 45 mM/15 mL 19.6% 15 mM/5 mL 100 units/mL 250 mg/2 mL. 2.5 mEq/mL 4.65 mEq/10 mL 40.6 mEq/10 mL Sodium acetate Sodium phosphate Potassium acetate Potassium phosphate HumulinR insulin Vitamin C 60 mEq/15 mL 2 mEq/mL 4.4 mEq/mLPharmacy Calculations

You have a new order for TPN for a patient and it is written as follows. Total volume 2000ml: 60 gm of 10% amino acids, 250 gm of D70W and 250ml lipids,Sodium Chloride 70meq, sodium phosphate 10 mMol, potassium chloride 80 meq, potassium phosphate 15mMol, magnesium sulfate 10meq, calcium gluconate 10meq, 1ml of trace elements, 10ml MVI, 40 units of Humulin Regular Insulin.Use the concentrations found on page 313. Figure out total ml of all ingredients needed for TPN ( round each to nearest tenth)and List individually. Then figure the total volume of ingredients and figure out how much Sterile Water for injection will be needed to meet the order volume requirements.

I can't figure out how to do this!! My book does not have anything helpful

Answer #1

Total parental nutrition is a method of feeding through IV which will help in providing most of the nutrition for the body needs.

60 gm of 10% amino acid will make 600ml

250gm of D70W will make 357.14 ml

Lipids 250ml

70meq sodium chloride makes 175ml

10mmol sodium phosphate converted to 10meq makes 10ml

80meq potassium chloride makes 160ml

15mmol potassium phosphate makes 15ml

10meq magnesium sulfate makes 2.46ml

10meq calcium gluconate makes 21.50ml

Trace elements makes 1ml

MVI 10ml

Human insulin 40units makes 0.4ml

Total ml 1602.5ml

Total amount if solution prescribed 2000ml

Sterile water needed is 397.5ml
