A 56 year old man has gallstones, which causes pain when his gallbladder contracts. What types of foods would he avoid and why?

Gallstones also called as Cholelithiasis.gallbllader is a senstive organ that collects and stores bile from the liver.

The primary stage of formation is very small size of stones in gall bladder and gradually get bigger, eventually its affects the flow of digestive enzymes from the gallbladder.A heavy fat meai is the major triggering factor of the gallstones.

When having a meal, the gallbladder decrease  to push the bile and other digestive enzymes into the intestine. If there is presence of the gallstones they can block the contractions, which can be quite painful.This kind of pain is called a gallbladder attack, or biliary colic.

Main types of gallstones are:

  • cholesterol stones,made of mostly hardened cholesterol
  • pigment stones,made of bilirubin

Diet:

Include in diet:

Eat more fibre content foods such as vegetables,fruits, peas.whole grains including brown rice, oats.

Eat healthy fats (fish oil and olive oil)

Foods to avoid:

Fried foods (fried chicken, French fries, potato chips)

Processed meats (bacon, ham, sausage)

Alcohol&tobacco

Creamy sauces and rich dressings (cheese sauces, mayonnaise, creamy salad dressing

Refined carbohydrates(white bread, pizza dough, pasta, pastries)

Sugar.

Unhealthy fats(high-fat dairy foods,tropical oils,fatty cuts of beef, pork, and lamb)
