27. Nasal decongestant produces localized Vasoconstriction of the small blood vessels of the nasal membrane.

Nasal congestion mainly occurs due to inflammation that leads to vasodilation of small blood vessels in the nasal lining,  Nasal decongestant relieves from nasal congestion by constricting those blood vessels.

28. A mucolytic is a drug that loosens and thining the secretions.

Mucolytic drug loosens and thining the secretions and makes it less thicky and less sticky by which its easier to excrete, it is mainly used in productive cough.

29. A 15-year patient has been prescribed dextromethorphan syrup for the treatment of cough. A nurse is teaching the patient how to self administer by using a 30ml cup provided with the drug.

The syrup contains dextromethorphan 5mg/5ml and the patient needs 15mg per dose, then the nurse should show 15 ml to pour into the cup

5mg/5ml I.e 1mg=1ml

15mg x 1mg/ml = 15ml

30. A patient with persistent cough has been prescribed 10ml of codeine every 4 hours.

The syrup contains codeine 15mg/5ml

The patient will get 30mg of Codeine

15mg + 5ml = 3mg/ml

10ml x 3mg/ml = 30mg
