39) UTERINE ATONY : THE term itself is self explanatory "uterine" meaning uterus," atony" meaning "a" that is absent & "tony" meaning contraction. thus uterine atony means absence of uterine contractions.

This condition is the most common cause of postpartum hemorrhage.

managment: Replace the blood loss through bood transfusion

drugs to be given oxytocin 20 units injection in 500ml of normal saline or ringer lactate and run it at the rate of 20 to 40 drops per minute .

even after oxytocin drip if there is no response then give injection methylergotamine 0.25mg IV this can be repeated upto four doses

if still bleeding continues inj prostaglandin PGF2alpha can be given 250micrograms and can repeat upto 8 doses

bimanual compression of uterus is another method
