Pathology of dehydration

The causative factors >>leads to decrease in body fluids>>volume decreases in intracellular and extracellular volume>>loss of electrolyte >>sodium and potassium loss ,increased BUN and creatinine >>increases serum osmolality level causesconcentrated urine>>decrease blood volume leads to hypotension>>hypovolemic shock>>death

Etiology

• Decreased oral intake due to medical conditions(oral cancer,stomatitis, pharyngitis,adrenal hyperplasia, diabetic insipidus, thyrotoxicosis) poor diet habits
• Diarrhoea due to infection
• Diabetic ketoacidosis due to diuresis whivh is osmotic in nature
• Heat stroke

Signs and symptoms

• Thirsty and drinks plenty of water to combat the fluid loss
• Confusion when there is severe hyponatremia
• Decrease in urine output due to vasopressin action on the kidney and dark color urine is notable
• fatigue and tiredness due to extracellular and intracellular fluid shift
• Hypotension due to decreased blood volume
• Sunken eyes,dry skin can be seen
