What is Rheumatic fever? What is the causative agent? How do you identify this organism in the lab ? How is it transmitted? If a patient has Group A strep in his leg wound, would you notify the MD?

Rheumatic fever is an immune reaction to the group A streptococcal (strep) infections affecting the throat hence its known as strep throat.

Major causative agents are as: Group A streptococcus & Streptococcus pyogenes.

In lab it is identified by positive Lancefield group A antigen test.

This organism is transmitted by the direct contact with mucus from nose /throat of infected person or by the wound or sore of infected person.

At the end if a patient has Group A strep in his leg wound I will notify the MD as soon as possible as this may be communicated from the wounds/sores.
