Some of the factors impacting substance use and abuse are: personality traits, attitudes and beliefs, genetics, peers, community, parents, marketing, portrayal in the media, the cost, and federal laws.

Primary and secondary prevention
Primary prevention focuses on preventing substance abuse from starting.
Secondary prevention focuses on limiting the extend of substance use and harm reduction.
