Before we take action to prevent substance abuse ,we should know the factors which causes substance abuse .

Some of the factors impacting substance use and abuse are: personality traits, attitudes and beliefs, genetics, peers, community, parents, marketing, portrayal in the media, the cost, and federal laws.

# Prevention is of two types :-

Primary and secondary prevention

Primary prevention focuses on preventing substance abuse from starting.

Secondary prevention focuses on limiting the extend of substance use and harm reduction.

#Some different approaches to substance use prevention are:-

- abstinence

- responsible use

- providing knowledge

- reducing drug availability

- law enforcement

There are also objective approaches and Self-Esteem Enhancement and Affective Education.
