Question
Two masses mA 1.0 kg and m 12.0 kg are connected by a rope as shown in the figure. The coefficient of kinetic friction between each of the masses is and the inclined plane is μk 0.25. Determine the acceleration of the system.

Answer #1

Let the mass mB has an acceleration a towards the direction of velocity. So, the all system will have same acceleration as both masses are connected by a mass - less string.

The force of friction is defined as

f = mu N

Where, N is normal force

i.e.   f_{A} = mu N_{A}

and f_{B} = mu N_{B}

From the free body diagram , we can write

  N _{A} = m_{A}g , cos , 51^{circ} (g = 9.8 m/s2 is acceleration due to gravity) ..............................(1)

  BmBg cos 21° . .........................(2)

R AC .........................(3)

m_{B} , g , sin , 21^{circ}-T - f_{B} = m_{B}a .............................(4)

Now we can write equation (3) and (4) as :

T - mu , m_{A}g , cos , 51^{circ} - m_{A} g , sin , 51^{circ} = m_{A} a ............................(5)

and m_{B} , g , sin , 21^{circ}-T - mu , m_{B} , g , cos , 21^{circ} = m_{B}a ...........................(6)

Adding equation (5) and (6), we get

m_{B} , g , sin , 21^{circ}-m_{A}g , sin , 51^{circ}-mu , m_{A } g , cos , 51^{circ} - mu , m_{B} , g , cos , 21^{circ} = (m_{B} + m_{A}) a

Putting all the given values, we get

  2.1447.616-1.542-27.447-13a

or, 5.539-13a

or, a = 0.426 m/s2
