Iron deficiency anemia happens when the body does not have enough iron. The patient is a vegetarian and does not have much iron consumption in her food. the body needs iron especially for a young runner for their endurance activities. When there is low iron there will be increased fatigue. the patient has heavy menstrual bleeding so she loses her iron content in the blood which causes iron deficiency anemia.
Medication and dosage:
Treatment of iron deficiency Anemia for an athlete with consistent suboptimal food intake needs an iron supplement. Ferrous sulfate(feso4) 100mg low to moderate dose is an efficient medicine that can be consumed daily with vitamin C like citrus juice that improves the absorption.
Patient education:
-Advice patients not to overload the supplement which causes organ dysfunction.
-Take iron tablets after the meal.
-Don't take supplements with antacids it interferes the iron absorption.
- Advice patient to take her iron food intake like beans, nuts, sunflower seeds, green leafy vegetables, apricots, iron-fortified cereals.
