It's essentially an investment in technology and future capabilities that are transformed into new processes, products, and services. The goal usually mostly is added to the company’s bottom line. Bottom line is commonly used in reference for the actions that usually increase or decrease the company's net earnings or overall profit. In the similar way, the research can actually work in decreasing the costs through more efficient products or more efficient production processes. With the research company is likely to grow its earnings or decreasing costs, thus is said to be beneficial in the company’s bottom line
