Answer #1

1. Isotonic solution : D5/W ( in the bag)

Hypotonic solution : D5W ( in the body)

Isotonic solution is having the same concentration of solutes as human blood. D5/ w , is packaged as an isotonic solution that contains 5% of dextrose in water ( carbohydrate solution).

Hypotonic solution is having less solute concentration ( example: 0.45% NaCl). Once the D5/W enters the body, the cells immediately absorb the glucose, then the IVfluid become hpotonic solution (in the body).

Hypertonic solution: D5/ 0.45% NaCl.

2. Intravenous fluid therapy after an abdominal surgery is essential as there is no oral nutrition to maintain Fluid and electrlolyte balance in the body. There is a need of routine maintenance of IV therapy for 4 days is needed to compensate fluid and blood loss during surgery, to enable the kidney for proper excretion of nitrogenous waste products etc. ( Now a days Once the gastrointestinal functions returns, there will not be much more IV therapy). Fluid deficit may result in low blood pressure, that may leads to shock and collaps and damage to the major organs.

3. Enteral nutrition

Enteral nutrition is the nutrition given by way of intestine or within the intestine( enteral). In enteral nutrition feeding taken through a tube that goes to stomach or to intestine.

Enteral feeding is well tolerated by the patients who undergone abdominal surgery. Studies show that early enteral feeding helps in the early appearance of peristaltic sounds in the intestine. It helps to meet the high demands of nutrition in post operative patient for the tissue repair. It prevents negative protein balance in the body and helps in maintaining immune system, muscles and brain functions and it helps in speedy recovery.

4. Difference between ' Ensure enteral solution and other enteral solution: Ensure enteral solution is a balanced nutrition solution when comparing with other enteral solution. ' Ensure ' contains all the essential nutrients and it is ideal for enteral feeding. It is available in various forms such as high protein, high calorie solution.
