Incontinence can be defined as loss of voluntary control of the passing of the urine or faeces. It could occur due to bowel or bladder dysfunction, neurological diseases, child birth
Three ways to assist the client manage incontinence are :-
1. Bladder training programme - it helps to gain control over bladder emptying. It is an effective strategy to deal with urinary incontinence. It aims to increase the time between emptying the bladder and the amount of urine the bladder can hold. The procedure for bladder training programme is scheduling the time for voiding of urine.
2. Pelvic floor muscle exercise - pelvic floor exercises help to strengthen pelvic muscles. Pelvic muscles help to support pelvic organs like urinary bladder, intestine and uterus. They also help maintain the urinary continence and bowel control.
Strengthening of these muscles require repeated contraction and relaxation of the muscles. Pelvic floor strengthening help to treat incontinence.
3. Teaching the client proper use of incontinence aids like pads, catheter and condom drainage.
