I attended lactation services at Valley Medical Hospital on November 11, 2019. There was two resisted nurse providing breastfeeding education for inpatient and outpatient. We all remember the benefit of breastfeeding for the baby and the mother.

Breastfeeding allows the mother to provide perfect nutrition for the baby throughout development. Breastfeeding is a wonderful investment for mothers and newborn babies ' future life. For the first 30 minutes, the staff was reviewing the patient charts, organizing their work, and prioritizing their tasks. I observed when my nurse helps mothers with feeding difficulties, sore nipples, milk supply, premature babies. I had an opportunity to see a mother who had three babies and using a pump to store breast milk for her babies. I observed when the nurse politely assesses mother concerns and understanding of pump and safety techniques. Lactation serves are the more educating mothers and demonstration how to breastfeed safely. Every mother visited by lactation consultant before discharged to make sure mothers are feeding their baby correctly. Most full-term babies are alert and eager to breastfeed within the first hour of life. Keeping baby skin-to-skin with mother until the first breastfeeding is completed is very important to establish a positive breastfeeding experience. I observed when the nurse demonstrated hand expression to release breast milk. I understood that hand expression helps to stimulate the breasts which will increase mother milk supply.

Hand expression is much more effective than a breast pump in collecting colostrum in the few days after birth. I saw when the mother understood breastfeeding frequently and properly assures her baby the best nutrition and keeps mother milk supply abundant. It also decreases engorgement, clogged ducts, and the chance of mastitis (breast infection). A lactation consultant is providing education related to breastfeeding, mother nutrient, infection prevention, and other tips for mothers before they discharged home. This service is very critical and should be focused more because breast milk is more than everything for baby life. Finally, the nurse provided breast milk guides and contact information in case they need more information.
