Our government should not provide free health care to all the US citizens, because it will make health care to be a public good and it will create free rider problem, leading to the market failure. Further, people will have tendencies to take more risk as all cost of health care will be paid by the government, leading to the adverse selection and moral hazard problem as well. Besides, not making it free for everyone, will not make excessive financial burden upon the government as well.
Rather, government should categorize its US citizens into the different categories such as senior citizen, people under poverty, disabled people and people earning incomes among the others. On the basis of it, government should put premium that can be nominal or higher, depending upon the paying capacity and type of services required. Here, the government should ensure that everyone should have access to the health care that is most important aspect of the health care delivery.
