A resident who is cognitively intact has a swallowing problem from a past stroke. The resident is a risk for choking is said resident eats regular food, Safety is maximized by a mechanically altered diet - the resident receives purred (baby food) to prevent choking. Autonomy is negatively impacted, because the nursing home resident want regular food and understands the risk. In addition to values being at odds, it often places the family and the resident at odds (family does not want the resident to choke to death. As in this case , the patient had a stroke and because of which the resident wants him to have purred feed to avoid choking for his safety but the patient wants have normal food as he is cognitively intact . Ethically the resident is taking the correct action but it's breaking the autonomy of the patients which is also not ethically right . As per the regulation ,the resident is acting according to the rules giving safety aspect priority than autonomy .
