Explain how the assigned learning experiences in the course influenced your image as a professional nurse?

However, the increased availability of information can mean that rather than making finding evidence easier it can feel overwhelming. Now, more than ever, nurses need to learn not only how to gather evidence but also how to put that knowledge into everyday use. Not all evidence is robust or reliable. Nurses must learn to identify the best available evidence, taking into account the needs and preferences of health service users, while using their own expertise, skills and clinical judgement as to the feasibility of its use within the local context.

As nurses start to look for evidence, it can be very time consuming and expensive to look at each individual study. “Primary”1 evidence can also present contradictory views. There is a specialist set of skills associated with the weighing of large volumes of evidence in order to make recommendations. This work is frequently done by universities for health services. Recognising this challenge and the associated costs, many governments have established specialist units to develop clinical guidelines, systematic reviews and critical reviews.

Health systems are under pressure for resources and to ensure they use those that they have as effectively as possible. Until recently the EBP field put most of its emphasis on establishing the effectiveness of interventions.

Nurses need to feel confident about quantifying the anticipated outcomes of the new intervention from a range of standpoints.

Describe what you have learned about yourself and your level of competence as a nurse?

Healthcare consumers expect competency from the nurses who care for them and registered nurses (RNs) have an ethical and legal responsibility to maintain their competency. The scope of the professional nurse evolves continuously to adjust to the dynamic healthcare landscape, society’s changing needs, the political climate, and the expanding knowledge base of theory and scientific domains.

Healthcare has greatly changed due to issues such as disease structure changes and a rapidly ageing population with decreasing birthrates. Accordingly, healthcare and care provider systems are changing. For example, when a patient has an acute medical problem, the hospital is expected to provide short-term, intensive care. When the treatment is completed, home care is needed to provide support for treating the patient with dignity and respect until the end of his/her life. Thus, we must provide comprehensive care that meets patients’ complex and diverse needs. Regardless of work setting, this is required of all nurses; presently, there is a growing expectation that nurses should be able to combine various sources of information and incorporate these into their decision-making and nursing practice.

Nurses are always challenged on how they can contribute to society as professionals. They are expected to take professional responsibilities for continuously providing direct care, protecting individual lives and supporting activities of daily living.

Competence is an ability acquired through experience and learning. :

1) potential abilities that may work effectively under certain circumstances and

2) motivation to show one’s usefulness using those abilities. On the other hand, competency is a behavioural characteristic that is based on one’s interests and experiences influenced by his/her motivation and attitude. It is an optimal behavioural trait that likely leads to achievements.

Competence (ability) is a premise for developing competency (behavioural characteristics).

Discuss one BSN outcome that you feel you need to strengthen and provide a plan on how to strengthen the outcome in your professional practice?

A new generation of nurse researchers is helping to improve patient care, which is working to get patients involved in research to improve outcomes. In order to have evidence-based practice, we need evidence. And with their knowledge and hands-on experience, nurses can theorize, that need to be strengthened.

*Looking for new challenges it’s essential to broaden the nursing experience.

* Application of long-term future changes in hospital administration.
