WORK GROUP AND WORK TEAM:

A group is when two or more people are clubbed together either by the institution or because of social obligation.

A team is a set of people who are clubbed to attain a common target or purpose.

Difference between work group and work team:

  • A group is the association of people who function, mingle, collaborate with one another in attaining a task in a given time period. The members of the group share resources and data with each other. The work group is formed depending on the interests, faith, and background similarity of the members.

The work team is a set of people assigned to achieve a specific goal in a specific time period, sharing the accountability of the work. The work team share data, resources and the task. The results of the work will be a collective responsibility of the work team.

  • A work group may have one leader, but a work team may have more than one leader.
  • The members of a work group are independent, but the members of a work team are interdependent.
  • The work process of a work group is discuss, decide and then delegate the work. The work process of a work team is discuss decide and do the work as decided.
  • The work group mainly focuses on achieving individual goals, but the work team focus on achieving collective goals.
  • The accountability of the work in work group is individual, but the accountability of work in work team is either individual or mutual.

Benefits of work team:

  1. The members of the team get opportunity to learn from each other. The more experienced people can teach the less experienced members and the work capacity is increased and individual growth is benefitted too.
  2. During the work process, new ideas come up and new approaches are identified to achieve the task.
  3. Team made decisions are better accepted and understood than the individual decisions, as the accountability is shared.

Risks of work team:

  1. The members of the team must be selected based on the qualification and experience required for the task, otherwise the expected standard of work may not happen
  2. Within the team, “free riding” may happen, if some members do not get enough of work or responsibility to do. Such team mates usually wander   without much work compared to other team mates and this may initiate non co operation in the team.
  3. Team work is time consuming, as there is need for co ordination and harmony.
