Health Information System( HIS)

HIS is also called as Hospital Management Software( HMS). It is a large computerized data base management system that processess patient data in order to support patient care.( Medical Dictionary). This information System is used by health care personnels especially clinicians to access the client's data so that they can plan , implement and evaluate the patient care.

Importance of HIS

HIS mainly focuses on the administrational needs of the health care facilities. It is an element of Health Informatics. Potential benefits: accurate distribution of medical aid,efficient administration of engineering and finance,drug usage monitoring, integrity in information, less transcription errors, preventing duplication of work like entries of information and also helps to pull up data from server. Overall HIS is used for recording, analysing, and sharing of client's health data.

Role of HIS

A well planned Health Management System helps the health care facilitie's authority to provide cost effective, excellent, thorough health care services to the people. Electronic Medical Record(EMR) , electronic health record( EHR), Master Patient Index( MPI), Remote Patient Monitoring(RPM) are some examples for HIS. HIS is used in evidence- based decision making in a country's health system. Less developed countries are using HIS to improve the implementation of Primary Health Care to the needy. HIS is a turning point in health care system and to public health . In HIS , there is no scope for errors because of the use of automated management system. Moreover it improves data security. It protects the patient's data from unauthorised access.
