Propionic acid and sodium propionate forms an acidic buffer. Therefore, pH of buffer is calculated by Hendersen-Hasselbalch equation,

pH = pka + log [Sodium propionate] / [Propionic acid]

pka value for propionic acid = 4.87

Concentration of propionic acid and sodium propionate are:

[Propionic acid] = 0.10 M

[Sodium propionate ] = 0.20 M

Therefore,

pH = 4.87 + log 0.20 / 0.10

pH = 4.87 + log 2

pH = 4.87 + 0.3010 = 5.1710

pH = 5.17
