The formula to calculate the number of instances /frequency in a category frequency distribution

=COUNTIF(A1:A10," Male")

So, the above formula will count the number of times A1:A10 range has "Male".

In case you want to reference it to a category in a column(lets say column B1 to B10 has the category) then the formula will change to :

=COUNTIF(A1:A10," B1")

2.

Between 4 and 15 there are 10 numbers.

Here, by definition 4 and 15 are not included.
