Answer #1

Given:

Medication :Cefotaxime

Dose:900mg

Route:IV

Frequency :Every 6 hours once

Weight:18kg

To calculate safe dose

Given 50_200mg/kg/day

If it is 50mg/kg/day (1kg=50mg)

then 18 kg=??

cross multiply and divide

18×50÷1=900mg/day

So for 200mg/kg/day

200×18÷1=3600mg/day

So the safe dose range is 900mg to 3600 mg /day

If the child has to be given 900mg /dose

Then for 6 hourly it will be 4 doses in a day

Therefore 4 doses multiplied by single dose is equal to 24 hours or a day's dose

=900×4

=3200mg/day (This is with in safe dose range for the child)

In grams 3200mg=3.2gram

Given 1gm powder after dilution gives 95mg/ml

So 3200mg=??

=3200÷95

=33.68 or 34 ml

34 ml is the amount needed in total

When concentration is 50mg=1ml

Then 900mg=??

900÷50=18ml

Flow rate=Total volume×drop factor×60 (for 1 hour)

=18×15÷1×60

=4.5 ,so in half hour it will be doubled 9 gtt/min.
