Nursing interventions to be performed before taking to the New born Nursery

  • After immediate delivery clamp the cord of the baby before mixing up with the maternal blood.
  • Cover the new born with warm blankets or else using mummy restrains in order to avoid heat loss.
  • Teach the mother about kangaroo care method , techniques and uses of it.
  • Apgar score must be checked at 1 min and 5 min, normal rate is 8/10 and less than 7 must be provided immediate care.
  • All the necessary care must be provided such as baby bath, cord care, eye care, skin care, and also assessment of the baby physically for any anomalies.
  • Educate the mother about the importance of colostrum and breast milk and make the mother to breast feed her baby. Normal delivery with in 1/2 hr., c- section with in 2 hrs.
  • Check the baby for cleft lip and cleft palate which affects sucking reflexes.
  • Check all the reflexes of the new born baby and any discrepancy must be notified to the physician.
  • Low birth weight babies, babies born to the diabetic mothers must be taken advanced care as per the requirement.
  • NICU care must be recommended if necessary.
