21. Diabetes insipidus is a disorder of the pituitary gland caused by deficiency of ADH characterized by excess thirst and passage of large volume of (up to 15 quarts/day) diluted colourless urine, dry hands, and constipation
Nursing interventions :-
- daily weights, restrict diuretic foods (coffee)
- treat dehydration/electrolyte imbalance,
- teach client to drink when thirsty, wear medical alert bracelet, signs of dehydration
- fiber and/or laxatives for constipation
- skin care; moisturize, soft toothbrush, alcohol-free products
22. SIADH - syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone
pituitary gland releases too much ADH in response, kidneys reabsorb more water decreasing urine output and expand bodys fluid volume
pt experiences hyponatremia, hemodilution and fluid overload without edema
water is being absorbed by the body and returned to circulation which increases blood volume - kidneys not peeing it out.
Nursing interventions :-
- inatke of vasopressin
- daily weight monitoring
- fluid restrictions
- IV hypertonic saline infusion
- removal of tumor
