Epidemiology is derived from there word ie. Epi - upon, demos - people, logy - study. Epidemiology is described as study about people, factors affecting their health Related events and it's distribution, and applying this study for prevention and control of health problems in the society.

Epidemiology mainly deals with health patterns across different population in a given period of time. Epidemiology mainly consist of two components ie. Discriptive epidemiology and analytical epidemiology.

Descriptive epidemiology mainly deals with the charactertistic of the population affected with a particular condition during epidemics and the data is mainly organized and presented in three epidemiological variables ie. Time, place and person.

Such presented data allows the epidemiologist to determine the following data

1. The extend of public health problem under investigation

2. Health of the population to whom the epidemic is easily communicated.

3. Identifies population at greatest risk

4. Predict the course of disease which might occur

5 .determine secular trends of disease

6. Determine the seasonal pattern which might cause the outbreak of a particular disease

While organizing the data into time, place and person, the epidemiologist studies about the determinants and factors affecting the health among a particular population which helps to clearly identify population at risk and thereby implement preventive and protective measures to prevent a Disease

After discriptive epidemiology, analytical epidemiology helps us to understand the association of particular Disease with the demographic variables already obtained in the discriptive epidemiology. Analytical epidemiology is mainly concerned with cause and effect of a Disease in a population. It tries to prove the cause the effect relationship.

As an epidemiologist understand about a Disease and it's course and various association with demographic variables of a public, they can implement various preventive and protection measure such as flu shots, vaccination drives, fumigation drives for killing mosquitoes etc.

With such implementation, public health related consequences are easily identified, minimized and prevented.
