Was the Chilean military coup d’état justifiable, considering the damage Allende’s policies had caused the economy and the influx of communist aid and left-wing activists?
Chilean military coup took place in 1973 to remove the elected government of Salvador Allende that had socialist orientation. But, the military coup could not be justified, because one ruler in the form of Salvador Allende was removed by another military ruler who suspended all the democratic and political activities and established Junta. Further, the military coup was also driven and supported by the US administration led by president Nixon that was also not correct for the best interest of Chile.
Rather, USA should have build dialogue with the socialist
government, work towards conducting free and fair elections in
Chile and let the elected government to work for the best interests
of the people of Chile. But, it did not happen, the army leader
that was elected by Allende, revolted against him, though supported
by the US government. So, Chile headed from one troubling ruler to
another troubling leader, creating more of a political instability
in the country.
